I've had a thought on my mind for a few days that I couldn't really completely finish for a while.
I think it's mind blowing how often you see photographers blame outward factors for being unhappy with their results. So many times you see people talk about what would be different about their work if they could only shoot a certain camera or lens, or work with a certain lab, or shoot more film. Or it's about money, what part of the world they live in, the weather, their work commitments or their kids holding them back. It makes me sad whenever I see someone do that. I don't believe that that's true, I think it's just a way to get out of the responsibility.
That's not what photography is about. For me, photography is like running a marathon. It's about not giving up. It's about trying to make something awesome - against all odds. Very often you're just god damn lucky to be at the right spot and have your eyes open at the right time. You don't need the perfect light, an expensive camera or to overthink all these little details. It's never the outer circumstances that make a good picture.
