We went to Portland today and I gave the Department of Homeland Security my fingerprints. Afterwards we went to the mall and Rebecca got a new handbag. I noticed another security officer in the mall and after a short conversation he kindly let me take his portrait. I remember how I got yelled at and almost kicked out for trying that in Nashville.
I thought a lot about failure today. I wrote about discomfort and vulnerability a few days ago and I think I need to add failure into the equation too. It's so tempting to hide in a safe place photographically where you don't take risks anymore that you know will make you fall, get up and try again. And learn from the experience. But failure is what forces development. Taking risks with the possibility of failure is necessary in order to not stagnate or tread water creatively. And to stay humble.
I would like to try to embrace failure as much as success and appreciation.
