I photographed a little barber shop in town a few weeks back with an older gentleman giving another older gentleman a haircut. Today we walked through town and I saw that the shop has closed down. I didn't realize it when I took the picture, but that must have been one of the last haircuts the barber gave one of his clients.
I feel that as much as it's important to be quick to photograph a certain emotion in a certain light or expression, and find a way to hold on to these fleeting moments in some way, is it important to document what's around you. Your kids growing up, the town you live in, your friends getting older, maybe your parents or grandparents.
I would give all the riches in the world to travel back in time and photograph my grandmother in the house I grew up in. But neither my grandmother nor her house are here anymore.
